Ramblings of Today

I have been thinking a lot of what to do with this site and my social media presence. I am very active on social media, last week I decided to take a break from Facebook. With the election and inauguration the negativity that is around is so over flowing it is just sad. I am sure it was that way eight years ago as well. I am also tired of seeing of the negative comments about overdoes. We are in the beginning of a massive health crisis with overdose I believe in my opinion. I am so saddened and worried about the current generation and the amount of lives that will be lost.

People need to have empathy. Stop being so negative and show empathy and love. I don’t believe in removing accountability, but I do believe in compassion.

This post is a rambling, just like my site says in the tag line. Ramblings of a Pittsburgh Dad. I am trying to decide how I want to proceed. I have a lot of activities in my life and I enjoy them. I love being a father and being there for my children. They are now teenagers, which is very stressful and trying. I want to be with them and be there to help them.

I am also very active in my work, I am a technologist and work primary at this time with Dynamics 365. This is challenging and I love challenges. I am very lucky to work for a great company and have some wonderful leaders. I say leaders, because they are more than “bosses”, they are leaders who are there to help and coach. I have seen this personally and am very grateful.

Why do I blog? I enjoy writing, I may not be the best writer and I do not debate them. But I enjoy it. I enjoy putting my thoughts on “paper” (really the screen). It helps me focus and reflect on events and thoughts. I have also been interested in video, ever since I was a teenager myself and it was very difficult at that time. Video has so much to offer and ways of engaging with people and sharing your thoughts.

I am trying to plan my 2017 as far as social media (Blogging, Video) and the platforms that are available to help bring engagement. I would like my children to be involved in some of it. I would like to share what I learn and also learn from them. I know I can learn from them, to thing that I can’t learn is foolish.

My next post will be on my intentions for 2017, a little late since we are now in February, but I want to do that.

Why I do what I do

I have been blogging since 2011! WOW!

Why do I blog?

Technology Geek

Well, I am a technical professional. I work in technology and enjoy technology. I am amazed by the advancements that we are seeing on a rapid pace. I remember in the early nighties setting up internet “newsgroup” for a corporate BBS, before the web was what it is today. Now,people have access to so much information in the palms of their hands.

Writing Wantabe

I enjoy writing, always have, even when I was a child I would write stories. I am not the best writer and also not the best with English grammar… But, I write because I enjoy it. I enjoy sitting and putting my thoughts on paper or now a screen. I write in a journal regularly. Writing a blog is different that journaling though. A blog is public compared to my private journal. Big difference.

Blogging

I maintain a blog for many reasons. I started because I am a technologist and like to learn more about technology. I use my time with a blog to learn more about technology, keep up to date and record my notes. I also write on a blog to share my thoughts and notes on technology and hopefully start a conversation.

I share my perspective about topics that I am concerned with. As a global community we have the capability to share news and perspectives very easily now. Setting a blog is easy and allows you to share your thoughts.

Responsibility

I think that you should think before you share anything though. We have seen that on social media, people sharing everything and also not thinking about what the effects of what you are sharing will have. I try to think before I share, try. We are all human and make mistakes.

Why I Do It?

So, why do I do what I do? This question came up at the school district I belong to and I just love the question and reflecting on this. I think this question is a good regular prompt and have a scheduled reminder on Day One, which I use for journaling. I share what touches me and also things that I enjoy. I also share adventures that I am on. I have “met”, some interesting people that share my same thoughts this way. I have learned from many people that I might not have known otherwise.

Addiction & Overdose

I share a lot of information about overdose and addiction on this blog and everywhere I can. This epidemic affects me personally and we as a society need to do something to address it. We are living in a time when we are loosing a generation of people from addiction. People are being prescribed addictive medicines that can have tragic consequences. People do not have empathy or compassion for people who are suffering or the families that are having their hearts ripped apart. I hope to help raise awareness to this health crisis and help make changes. I firmly believe that we can ALL make a difference. If each of us would do something, the collection of small actions can make a big difference. Little by little, individuals join together and changes can occur.

Ramblings of a Pittsburgh Dad

The purpose of this blog is just like the subtitle says Ramblings of a Pittsburgh Dad. I am a proud father and husband from Pittsburgh. I am a technologist by trade, an activist (never thought of myself that way) and an elected school board member. I enjoy learning about other points of view and reflecting on what I hear. I believe that we have to be open minded and consider the thoughts and feelings of others. We don’t have to agree and I don’t agree with all of my friends. But, I try to listen to what people have to say and discuss politely. I think that is what makes this country great, we can speak out and express our different points of view.

If we as a society would listen more with an open mind we can do anything.

What do you do what you do?

129 A Day – Fitness Challenge in August

2015-06-05-at-070744_18459458286_oAs many of you know I was crushed with the loss of Amber. She was wonderful and caring person who I loved like my own child. Spending time with her always filled my heart with joy. My children thought of her as a big sister.

My friend Alan suggested a fitness challenge to raise awareness to addiction, recovery and accidental overdose. We have an epidemic in our country right now. This year is expected to have more overdoes that last year which was a horrible year for overdoes. It is estimated that 129 people lose their battle each and every day to an overdose in the United States.

The challenge will begin on August 1st and end on August 31st, International Overdose Awareness Day. I am honored to be collaborating with Alan, Laurie, The Gym Pittsburgh and 129aDay on this challenge.

Please join the challenge by registering at YinzersGetFit.com/129aDay and receive daily challenges beginning August 1st along with a profile from 129aDay.org of a person who lost their battle.

Together we can raise awareness and money to help people suffering from addiction and celebrate people who are in recovery.

Happy Father’s Day

One of the biggest accomplishments I have is being a father. I am blessed to have three great examples of father’s that I call Dad. I am also blessed to know many wonderful men that are both family and friends that have stood up to be a man and be a father.

Being a father has been, without a doubt, my greatest source of achievement, pride and inspiration. Fatherhood has taught me about unconditional love, reinforced the importance of giving back and taught me how to be a better person.

Naveen Jain

Being a father is much more than having children, being a father is being there for your children. Being there for all children and trying your hardest to set a good example and be a good role model. Being a Dad is the hardest job that I have and one that I take very seriously and will do anything for. A Dad is not always related by blood, but by LOVE.

Happy Father’s Day to my wonderful Dads and to each and every one of you who step up and doing your job as a Dad.

Grief – Words of a 12 year old

Yesterday at dinner after leaving the cemetery my 12 year old wanted to read something that she wrote about Amber. The picture is of the two of them when younger.

Below are are words and the video of her speaking.

Amber was a big part of everyone lives, You may tell yourself while your in grief I can’t picture life without her, well the answer is do you have to ? Amber never left you she just turned to somewhere else. She is still with us. She was here on Christmas and with everyone. Today she joined us, not only did she join us , she showed signs . She probably loved that she got to dance with everyone. She stayed still for the picture. Amber is here with us everyday. And something everyone probably didn’t notice she showed she is here eating with us. She made the balloons show that. The balloons reached out to everyone. A special moment that I saw Amber do I saw the balloons reach out to aunt nina as a hug . There are amazing moments each and everyone of us had with Amber that you will always remember .

I Love The New Me

ImageToday was weigh in day. I am very happy to say I lose a few more pounds!

I am loving my new lifestyle. I do not binge like what I used to do. I would say I have NOT binged in a long time. I do have times when I slip and eat things I shouldn’t. I am much better at portion control that I have ever been.

I have a drive and energy to go to the gym on a regular basis. I find enjoyment at the gym and trying new exercises. I am also now feeling muscles developing more, feeling that difference in me is huge and makes me feel so good.

Having my wife join me at the gym and also watching what she eats make it easier and helps us both try harder to find better ways of eating and getting to the gym.

Friday, I was exhausted and stressed. I didn’t want to go to the gym. I wanted to sit on the couch and just do nothing. My wife said let’s go to the gym. We went for a short 20 minute workout. I came back feeling so great!

Having people involved in your journey makes a huge difference and helps you to succeed. Build a support network, share your goals on social media and just keep trying.

I log every single bite I put in my mouth. I find this extremely valuable to me. I also measure what I eat which is helping me with portion control

Find an exercise routine that you can do. I started with just walking. I would walk every day and strive to reach my goal. I started with low goals and then gradually increased them. Now I set a daily calorie burn goal and work hard to reach it every day. I make the goal reachable and add a little challenge to it.

I don’t want to set myself up for failure.

I want to succeed.

I won’t fail.

We won’t fail.

Get Healthy As A Family #TheHow

This is a life journey!

I am not just going on a diet, I am changing my life.

I believe that with all of my heart and I am trying very hard to move along this adventure. Failure is not an option and I will NOT fail unless I quit. I started this journey in November 2015 and have struggled through the holidays and many other occasions..

26429378714_2f5e3aa8ae_zMy wife recently talked about wanting to start on her own journey. I am so excited that she is joining me and we can do this together. She has been so supportive of me since I started. She would leave nutrition labels out for me to log and help buy healthy food and try to hide food that would make it difficult for me. Having the person you love join you and support you makes all of the difference.

She met with my trainer to discuss how her journey will start and joined the gym. We created an account on LoseIt for her to log her food and have already went together to The Gym. We tried a class together and are learning how to make this work together. Together we will show our children that you can accomplish anything that you put your mind to. We will show them that making a big change in your life is possible. We will show them that hard work makes things very possible.

We have different specific goals but the ultimate goal is the same.

A Healthy lifestyle!

We will be posting about her experience as well as my experience as I move to toning and with the weight training that I have now added to my program.

Below are two wonderful resources that I use for my journey. Please check them out.

A New Me – How I Feel #LouLoss

I have talked about my health journey and things that I am doing on this journey.

Today, I would like to talk about how I feel.

I have been on this journey for about 6 months now. I have more energy and a general better feeling. I enjoy going to the gym and exercising, even when it is hard. I push myself and feel proud of what I am doing. I do NOT feel like I am restricting what I can eat, I am just making better decisions about what I eat.

I don’t like to miss any workout, I consider a workout any physical activity that I would NOT normally do. I nice walk, longer than I have done. Using the rower at the gym and lifting weights. I feel stronger, happier and motivated to continue this journey.

I am meeting new people that have the same goals as I do and we all motivate and support each other. I think this is very important, some of the people I just know online through LoseIt and others I have met in person at the gym. Having a support system in place is so important in life and in any adventure that you are on.

When I complete a workout with a sweat covered shirt, it makes me feel proud of what I accomplished. Seeing the drop in my weight and seeing the difference in the mirror is an amazing feeling. I feel that my goal is within reach.

I am now creating new goals. I don’t just want to loose weight now, I want to get fit. I want to completely change my lifestyle and become a more healthy person. I want to keep learning how to be healthy and help others along their journey. I want to make better decisions.

I find myself looking for people that are on the same journey as I am on. Some have been on this journey much longer and are maintaining some are just started. We all help inspire each other on a daily basis through interactions that we have. This weight loss journey is NOT just about seeing the number lower but about feeling better about the person I am.

My Lifestyle Change Journey

My journey started in November of 2015. Two weeks ago I joined The Gym Pittsburgh and enlisted a personal trainer, Laurie. I have been following her instructions, including a meal plan and new workout routines.

WeighIn20160430

I have lost 10 pounds in the two weeks that I have been training with Laurie at The Gym!  She pushes me to try harder and expand my comfort zone. She teaches me the right way to do exercises so I don’t hurt myself. Learning how to use the equipment keeps me safe and ensures that the exercises are productive. If I did these exercise on my own and don’t know the proper way I can get hurt. I also wouldn’t get the results because of bad form which Laurie monitors and teaches me. I feel having Laurie is a huge value to my journey. She is a partner in helping me do the right thing.

I am changing my lifestyle. I am making it a habit exercise every day. This week I lowered my treadmill distance a little and added the rower to my routine. I meet with Laurie twice a week and she targets specific areas. Yesterday was CORE and shoulders. I was using ropes while doing planks! I couldn’t believe I did that!

26634295162_a8a4b4683a_oToday, I changed my daily calorie burn goal from 350 to 400. I have been achieving my 350 calorie burn goal for 15 days now. I didn’t want to go to far because I don’t want to set myself up for failure. I believe in small achievable goals that push myself.

My calorie burn is based on exercise above and beyond what my body burns just from living.

The How

I find using LoseIt.com a huge help on my journey. The community of people are friendly. We motivate each other and work together to achieve our goals. I set goals on LoseIt that I monitor. Not only weight goals. I have goals for Sodium, Protein, Sugar, Carbs and Fiber set. I also added goals for my waist and bicep size. Add this in with weigh in pictures that I track on Evernote and I have everything I need to help myself. I do not meet all of my goals, but I watch them and learn from what I am doing.

I go to The Gym as often as possible, sometimes for a short walk on the treadmill, sometimes for a full exercise routine with Laurie and sometimes for a class. I love the yoga class which helps me keep myself in the moment and stretch and recover.

I am part of a Facebook group that has a community of friends all working on this journey. This is another huge help on this journey to learn and motivate me.

What works for you?

Why do you want to change your lifestyle?

Failure Is Not An Option #TheHow

I started this journey in November of 2015. I have been logging everything I eat. I have had several slips and falls. But I keep getting back up and trying again. Failure is NOT an option. A journey is an adventure and a challenge. You learn from your mistakes and adapt and make adjustments.

I have found that logging all of my food is a huge help and keeps me accountable to myself. This journey is about me and only me. I post about my journey to further my accountability. I learn from others, celebrate other’s success and am motivated by them. I struggle at times because I am changing my lifestyle. I try to push my comfort zone as much as possible.

I have found some very useful tips and articles by reading The How published by LoseIt. I set goals for myself that are realistic and measurable. I don’t totally restrict myself, if I did I would not succeed. I reward myself as I reach my goals. I am feeling the difference in my body and mind.

26312069430_9158fbf8ca_oI now have a personal trainer helping me who pushes me and advises me. Her guidance isTheGymPittsburgh_logo helping me move to my next level. Now, I not only walk but I have strength training as part of my regular routine. I try to have at least of 30 minutes of activity every day. I use the Apple Watch app to monitor to my daily goals with fitness.
